Dr. Sanjay Kulkarni is a leading Reconstructive Urologist of India. He has developed a new technique of Urethroplasty for Stricture Urethra. In the last 13 years, he has performed more than 200 perineal and transpubic urethroplasties for ruptured urethra following fractured pelvis. This is one of the largest series in India. Dr Kulkarni developed special interest in Reconstructive Urology during his registrarship under the world famous Urologist Mr R.T. Turner Warwick, at the Middlesex Hospital, London.

Born in 1953 Sanjay educated in prestigious B J Medical college in Pune. He received National Talent Scholarship during medical education. After surgery training he spent 5 years of Urology training in England. Sanjay was trained under Richard Turner Warwick, who is considered Father of Urethroplasty. In1987 along with his wife, Dr Jyotsna Kulkarni, he returned to Pune and lives with his in a joint family. Jyotsna is pioneer laparoscopic surgeon in India. Together they started India's first animal lab for Laparoscopic Surgery training in 1991.

Dr Sanjay Kulkarni along with Dr Guido Barbagli developed a new technique of pan-urethral stricture repair. This technique has revolutionized urethroplasty around the world. Dr Kulkarni's Center in Pune offers Fellowship in Reconstructive Urology recognized by GURS (Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Urologists) and MUHS (Maharashtra University of Health Sciences). Dr Kulkarni is the first Indian to serve as the President of GURS.

In 2009 he was awarded “Urology Gold Medal” for outstanding contribution to Urology in India by the West Zone Section of USI .In 2011 he was awarded Presidents Urology Gold medal at annual conference of Urological Society of India at Kolkata. He has published many articles in reputed journals and authored chapters in books on Reconstructive Urology. His book titled “Art of Urethral Reconstruction” is well appreciated and followed. He has served as President of West Zone section of USI. He is invited as a faculty at AUA, EAU, SIU and many international conferences. Nicknamed “Workshop Kulkarni”, he is instrumental in conducting workshops to demonstrate Urethroplasty in India and around the world. Dr Sanjay Kulkarni's goal is to train all interested urologists in Reconstructive Urology.

No patient should travel places for want of reconstructive urologist. Today his center receives more than 40 International urologists as observers. He is instrumental in establishing Indian School of Urethral surgery which conducts monthly workshops in Urethroplasty. His next agenda is to establish web based Urethroplasty workshops.
